Homes for Harrison (County)

Written by Legal Aid WV

Housing affects every aspect of a person’s life.  Without housing, how do you look for a job, you cannot bathe or brush your teeth.  Housing creates the stability a person needs to maintain positive growth and gives someone purpose.

In Harrison County, Homes for Harrison was created to end homelessness and serve those who are experiencing homelessness.  In 2013, a number of local agencies banded together after seeing to many chronic homeless die in the streets.  The agencies decided there was something we could do about this problem.  Local partners include: Clarksburg Harrison Regional Housing Authority, Clarksburg Mission, DHHR, Central WV Community Action, Legal Aid of West Virginia, volunteer attorneys, HOPE, Inc., Health Access, United Way of Harrison County, local governments and churches.

Homes for Harrison assists in placing the homeless in housing and then provides wrap around services. The group has assisted approximately 615 persons and families by helping them with securing housing, paying security utility deposits, paying security rent deposits, furniture, income such as social security or employment.  Legal Aid’s Clarksburg office participates by providing legal assistance to people who are placed into housing by the group. Legal Aid involves volunteer attorneys in the effort.  The volunteer attorneys appreciate the opportunity to give back to their community.
