How do I know if my unemployment is a direct result of a natural disaster?
Your unemployment is a direct result of a natural disaster if you are unemployed because of:
the place you worked was badly damaged or destroyed
you cannot get to the place you worked because it was closed by the government in immediate response to the natural disaster
the place you worked closed because it worked so closely with other businesses, agencies or people who were in the major disaster area that it lost money or work due to a natural disaster

Who is eligible for assistance?
You may be able to get Disaster Unemployment Assistance benefits if:
You lost your job directly because of a natural disaster
You cannot get to your job or self-employment location because you must travel through a disaster area to get there
You were about to start a job or self-employment, but a natural disaster kept you from starting
You became the breadwinner or major support because the head of your household died in a natural disaster
You cannot work or perform services in self-employment because you got hurt directly in a natural disaster

Do I have to live in the disaster area to get the Unemployment assistance?
You do not have to live in a disaster area to get the assistance. You may be able to get the help as long as you work in a disaster area.
What will I need to bring when I apply for disaster Unemployment?
You will need to provide proof of your past earnings, such as pay stubs or self-employment records, bank statements, and your most recent income tax form.
