Mental Health Care Program Acronyms

ATLAS – Access to Legal Aid Services – Legal Aid of West Virginia’s intake department—helps potential clients apply for LAWV services. To determine whether Legal Aid can help you, a person will ask you questions about where you live, household size, income and asset information. They will also conduct a required check for conflicts of interest and get a brief description of your problem. You can reach them by calling 1-866-255-4370.

BHHF – Behavioral Health and Health Facilities – WV Bureau of Behavioral Health and Health Facilities. State agency within the Department of Health and Human Resources with a mission to provide services to persons with mental illness, chemical dependency, developmental disabilities and those at-risk. BHHF tries to help who do not qualify for Medicaid or other funding, who are at risk of institutionalization, involuntary hospitalization, out-of-home and often out-of-state placement, who can be supported in their homes and communities with services. CBHC – Comprehensive Behavioral Health Center, under the umbrella of the Department of Health and & Human Resources is a publicly-funded community-based behavioral health system. There are 13 CBHC’s each serving specific catchment areas in the state. The phone number is 304-558-1008

CDC Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is the nation’s health protection agency, working 24/7 to protect America from health and safety threats, both foreign and domestic. CDC increases the health security of our nation. The phone number is 1-800-232-4636.  

CMS – Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services -Federal agency with the United States Department of Health and Human Services that administers the following: Medicare, Medicaid, State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments). DHHR – (West Virginia) Department of Health & Human Resources – State agency charged with administering public health programs and social services. DHHR also has services for children and vulnerable citizens. The hotline number is 1-800-642-8589.

DHHS (US) Department of Health & Human Services – The U.S. Government’s principal agency for protecting the health of its citizens and providing essential social services, especially for those least able to help themselves. Toll Free Call Center: 1-877-696-6775.​

HMO Health Maintenance Organization

HRSA – Health Resources and Services Administration. For questions about the Health Center Program, call 877-464-4772.

JCAHO Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations – A private, not-for-profit organization that evaluates and accredits hospitals and other healthcare organizations that provide mental healthcare, home care, ambulatory care and long-term care services. LAWV – Legal Aid of West Virginia- Statewide program that provides legal information, advice and personal advocacy services to individuals with disabilities, and many other vulnerable West Virginians. LAWV is the Hartley advocacy agency for mental health and substance abuse. The phone number is 1-866-255-4370.

OBHS – Office of Behavioral Health Services (also BHHF). The phone number is 304-356-4811. 

OCR – (U.S.) Office of Civil Rights – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) enforces federal civil rights laws, conscience and religious freedom laws, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules, and the Patient Safety Act and Rule, which together protect your fundamental rights of nondiscrimination, conscience, religious freedom, and health information privacy. SAMHSA Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration – Under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, SAMHSA is responsible for improving the quality and availability of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation services for substance abuse and mental illnesses. The National Helpline provides 24-hour free and confidential referrals and information about mental and/or substance use disorders, prevention, treatment, and recovery in English and Spanish.
