When you apply by phone, a member of our team will do a brief intake interview to determine whether we can help you. Before calling, learn more about eligibility, as well as the intake process and how to prepare. We also offer a helpful video series for clients.

If you have a hearing impairment, please use the 7-1-1 WV Relay.

Language interpreters are available for limited or non-English speakers who apply by phone.

Please note: When you apply online, you will still need to provide a phone number where you can be reached so we can speak with you directly. Before applying, you may want to review our eligibility guidelines.

Things to Remember When Applying Online:

  • Please DO NOT fill out more than one application for the same legal issue.  
  • We will call you 2-3 times to try to reach you. If we can’t reach you, we will send you a letter or email with information about how to call us back.
  • If you have a hearing or deadline within the next 10 days, DO NOT use the Online Application. Instead please call our Application Line at 866-255-4370 or reach out to your local office.

Are you applying for help concerning a criminal case?

We are sorry but Legal Aid of West Virginia cannot assist with your issue.  Legal Aid cannot assist with these types of problems.  You might be able to receive assistance from the following:

  • You may be eligible for assistance from the Public Defender’s Office—visit Public Defender Services.
  • The Lawyer Referral Service assists people in finding lawyers that are currently taking referrals in specific practice areas. Lawyers in West Virginia are not certified by the State Bar in any specific areas of law, but they may have experience or interest in that specific area of practice. You can search for an attorney in your area who, by signing up for this service, has agreed to see you as a client for an initial consultation for a fee of no more than $25 for the first 30 minutes of the consultation. The Lawyer Referral Service can be accessed online at wvlawyerreferral.org.

We are sorry but Legal Aid of West Virginia cannot assist with your issue.  Legal Aid cannot assist with these types of problems.  You might be able to receive assistance from the following:

  • Mountain State Justice (MSJ): Provides free legal assistance to low-income consumers facing problems with mortgages or other loans, debt collectors, or defective homes or vehicles. Please call MSJ to apply for services at 304-344-3144.

Are you applying for help concerning child support?

We are sorry but Legal Aid of West Virginia cannot assist with your issue.  Legal Aid cannot assist with these types of problems.  You might be able to receive assistance from the following:

  • Please visit our website for legal information on child support and other family law matters– – Family & Safety Archives – Legal Aid WV.
  • The Bureau of Child Support Enforcement (BSCE) can assist with establishing/changing child support orders, establishing paternity, enforcing prior child support orders, locating non-custodial parents, and collection of child support payments. You should contact your local BCSE office.  You can learn more about BCSE services and how to apply at https://bcse.wv.gov
