Charleston Lawyer in the School Attorney

Legal Aid of West Virginia (LAWV) is seeking a skilled motivated attorney to join our Charleston Office to coordinate our Lawyer in the School Program. This position is responsible for coordinating LAWV’s Lawyer in the School programs across WV. Lawyer in the School places staff attorneys onsite in public schools to provide legal help to families with children in eight WV counties. This position will be responsible for managing, coordinating, and reporting on grants that are funding these services, as well as supporting staff who work on Lawyer in the School programs locally. Work will also include some in-court representation, legal advice and information, and community education to families with children in Kanawha County Schools on civil legal issues. We also work closely with several community partners and take a holistic approach when it comes to meeting our clients’ needs. As an attorney, this position will allow you to employing project management skills, while also using your legal skills to engage with school families that need help.

Facility Advocate

Immediate opening for a Legal Aid of West Virginia Facility Advocate housed at William H. Sharpe Hospital. Must have 4 year degree or significant experience working with clients with mental or behavioral health challenges in an advocacy capacity. Benefits Attorney

Legal Aid of WV is seeking an attorney to represent clients pursuing public benefits that include Social Security disability benefits, SNAP, Medicaid, Aged & Disabled Waivers and other types of government benefit programs. An ideal candidate should have experience practicing administrative law and a demonstrated understanding of both state and federal means-tested benefits. Work will include direct representation of clients in benefits cases, working with non-attorney case handlers, reviewing cases for appeal consideration, representation of clients when appropriate in appeals relating to public benefits, and providing statewide support to all 12 LAWV offices in their benefits work. The attorney will work with clients and LAWV advocates across the state. Travel is required, though overnight travel will be limited.

Pro Bono Supervising Attorney

Legal Aid of WV (LAWV) is seeking a Supervising Attorney to lead LAWV’s Statewide Pro Bono Program. The position is in Morgantown, however, LAWV will also consider candidates who are located elsewhere. This position will coordinate, support, and oversee the provision of free civil legal help by attorneys who volunteer for LAWV to help LAWV clients. Initially, this Supervising Attorney will coordinate a comprehensive Assessment of LAWV’s Pro Bono Program, and work on implementing recommendations from the assessment, seeking to transform our pro bono work. The attorney will work with staff and volunteers across the state. Travel is required, though overnight travel will be limited. This is a three-year grant-based position, funded by the Legal Services Corporation Pro Bono Innovation Fund.

Project Support Paralegal

This is a defined term position which ends on December 31, 2022. Medical Legal Partnership Project Support Paralegal

Legal Aid of West Virginia (LAWV) is seeking a skilled motivated Medical Legal Partnership Project Support Paralegal to join our team in our Charleston Office. While LAWV will seek continuation funds for the position, this is currently a defined term position which ends on October 31, 2023. This position will provide support and intake for the Medical Legal Partnership Attorney in the provision of legal services to people in recovery from substance use disorder. The paralegal and attorney will primarily work with clients referred by partner treatment providers in Charleston and the surrounding region. The project will require reliable transportation for regular travel to assist with onsite outreach, training, and services at four primary partner locations in Kanawha, Mingo, and Cabell Counties. 

This position offers a chance to work with attorneys, medical partner staff and clients on an issue of great significance for West Virginia. We assist our clients with legal interventions that support their long-term recovery, such as driver’s license reinstatement, housing assistance, and criminal history expungements.

The position will be housed at LAWV’s largest office, located in downtown Charleston. Project Supervisor – Attorney

Legal Aid of West Virginia (LAWV) is seeking a skilled motivated attorney to join our Charleston Office as the Project Supervisor of the Legal Help for Renters Project. This position will be responsible for guiding LAWV’s Statewide Legal Help for Renters Project, in partnership with the WV Housing Development Fund, to provide legal assistance to improve housing and economic stability for renters. Responsibilities will include project management, including development of a Magistrate Court Pilot project, and development of outreach and trainings for clients, LAWV staff, and partner agencies. They will work with a team of attorneys and paralegals across the state and ensure grant requirements are met statewide. The position will also carry an active caseload serving the project.

FAST Family Advocate

Legal Aid of West Virginia (LAWV) is seeking a skilled motivated FAST Family Advocate to join our team in our Clarksburg Office. LAWV offers a great family friendly work environment and excellent benefit package which includes medical, dental and life insurance and paid leave. 

As the FAST Family Advocate, you will assist families who have children with mental health diagnoses who are struggling in school because of their mental/behavioral health challenges. The FAST Family Advocate helps educate families of their educational rights and assists in negotiating and resolving disputes with the school district. Knowledge of special education and it’s applicable federal and state laws (IEP’s, IDEA, 504 plans, etc…) is preferred. The FAST Family Advocate is also responsible for providing community outreach and training presentations on special education rights to various audiences.

The FAST Family Advocate based in the Clarksburg office of LAWV serves 16 counties in West Virginia’s northwest quadrant, including the cities of Parkersburg, Wheeling and Clarksburg. Reliable transportation is essential. Clarksburg is centrally located within 2 hours of both Pittsburgh, PA and Charleston, WV. We are 45 minutes south of Morgantown, WV, home of West Virginia University and Mountaineer sports. Renter’s Project Attorneys (Six)

Legal Aid of West Virginia (LAWV) is seeking skilled motivated attorneys to join our Legal Help for Renter’s Project in our Beckley, Charleston, Clarksburg, Huntington, Martinsburg, and Wheeling offices. This unit will work together to create novel approaches to address tenant issues across West Virginia. The unit will be guided by a Project Supervisor and work in concert with paralegals serving the statewide project.
